Simple Guide to Energy Audit Your Home

Doing a home energy audit is an easy way to see how much energy your house is using and losing every day. It can help you spot problems and take the right steps to improve your home’s efficiency. Depending on your goals and budget, you can either do the audit yourself or pay a professional to do it for you.

If you are planning to do a DIY home energy audit, here are some guidelines that can be helpful:

1. Find air leaks.

Check doors, windows, and any areas with gaps and cracks prone to air escapes and seal it.

To help you find leaks, close any doors or windows. Turn off combustion appliances, such as water heaters. Then turn on exhaust fans to pull air from the outside and make leaks more obvious. Either wet your hand and wave it in front of suspected areas; the draft should feel cool on your hand. Or you can use the smoke from a stick of incense to see where the air moves.

2. Check your appliances.

Inspect your frequently used appliances, opt for energy-efficient ones and replace those that are past their prime.

If a device has an indicator light, digital clock, charger, or AC power adapter on the cord, it’s likely drawing power. Put these devices, like phone chargers, TVs, computers, and others on power strips and switch them off when not in use to cut the power.

3. Check your air conditioning system.

Regularly clean or replace air filters. Check the air ducts for leaks or broken seals, and seal them. Take note to have your cooling systems checked by a professional every year.

4. Check your light fixtures.

While lighting usually makes up a smaller percentage of your energy bill, the savings from ensuring your lightbulbs are energy-efficient can really add up over time. Inspect your light fixtures and see if you can switch to alternatives, such as LED lights.

5. Develop an after-audit plan.

After you complete your audit, the next step is to develop a plan for improvements. Start with no-cost and low-cost improvements you can do yourself. Assess the improvements that you need to make before hiring a professional.

As you start auditing your home’s energy, remember that even little changes make a big difference. When you use less energy, you not only save money but also help make our energy future better. Let’s make a difference, one small energy-saving step at a time!
