Fire Prevention Tips for Your Home

For a fire to ignite and maintain combustion, three elements are needed: fuel, heat, and oxygen.

When at least one of these is missing or at low levels, a fire can’t start or spread. That’s why one of the basic strategies for preventing fire is to isolate sources of fuel or heat. Needless to say, removing oxygen from the equation is nearly impossible most of the time.

Fires may break out without warning, but that doesn’t mean they happen out of nowhere. Most of the time, fires are completely preventable. For your safety, check out the fire prevention tips below.

1. Check electrical connections.

Look for warning signs like flickering lights, sparking switches and plugs, and a burning smell when appliances are plugged in. Make sure electrical cords are visible, untangled, and placed properly.

2. Avoid plugging several devices into an extension cord.

Avoid electrical overloading at all times. Big appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators should have their own outlets.

3. Check your LPG.

Always close your Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) after use. Check for leaks by applying water and soap. Hose should be replaced every two years, and regulators every five years after they are manufactured.

4. Clear out dried things.

Dried stuff could easily catch fire from stray ashes or sparks. Clearing out dried things like wood and leaves from your surroundings and even on your roof could save you from an open flame.

5. Be cautious with open flames.

Practice caution when using candles. If you feel yourself dozing off, turn off all your candles beforehand. If you have children or pets, keep these open flames out of their reach.

6. Keep a fire extinguisher at all times.

Fire extinguishers will be your best defense in the event of a fire breaking out. Every family member should know how to use a fire extinguisher, so in case something in your home catches fire, it can be put out as fast as possible.

Prevention is the best fire safety measure. Following these fire prevention tips at home and in the workplace can help make your environment safe from hazards.
